Kick Decision Fatigue for Good!
Stuck in decision fatigue? Uncomplicate your life and get your power back with this simple exercise.
In 2023, I was part of a massive tech restructure. After the initial shock, I realized it was a blessing in disguise, offering me a unique opportunity to reflect on and reevaluate my life. An opportunity to forge a new path aligned with who I wanted to be, not the corporate-crafted version of myself I fell into. You see, somewhere along my career path, I lost sight of who I was and what I wanted. I tried to mold myself into the person they needed, at the expense of the person I wanted to be. I was grateful for the work, the pay, and the generous opportunities afforded to me as an employee, especially during a global pandemic. However, like many companies that had to pivot, my role pivoted me into an unnatural version of myself that I barely recognized.
The truth is this life circus we live in is full of curveballs. Nobody makes it through unscathed. Having a growth mindset and a positive attitude helps get you through tough times. Having some great tools helps too. You can’t become who you want to be if you don’t know where you are going. In addition, you will never reach your goals if you keep doing and being and accepting the same old ways. Drawing on one of my favorite exercises from Ringmaster Nation’s Path to Purpose, I was able to create a new path forward—Traci 2.0 for my career & finance life ring. A carefully curated, conscious, and intentional reflection of the person I wanted to become and the life I wanted to live. The version of 2.0 me, rooted in clarity. A guidestone to base all future decisions against.
After a short hiatus, my new career search began. With many opportunities in my path, I had to sort through the clutter. What line of work to choose? What type of company? Location? Pay? So many choices. So many decisions to make. At first, I was so overwhelmed. Fear set in. What if I make the wrong decision? How can I know the best option? Have you ever been there?! The wasted time and mental energy used ruminating over life’s many decisions can be paralyzing.
Luckily, I was able to weigh all opportunities against my 2.0 guidestone, making it relatively easy to say no to some opportunities, maybe to others, and finally yes to one! Knowing, with certainty, what I wanted and not settling along the way. Simply asking, “Does this opportunity support the career & financial life of Traci 2.0?” Was it hard? Sure. Frustrating at times, yes. And also rewarding. Finding a new path for my life rooted in intention allowed me to be the best version of myself and was well worth the effort. In fact, it made the process easy and uncomplicated. It freed me from the mental drain of indecision and kept me straight on my path forward.
Are you stuck with indecision in your career/finance, relationships, or personal life? Do you know, at your core, who you want to be and what you want these areas of your life to look like? If not, try this sample exercise (from Ringmaster Nation’s Path to Purpose) to create your own personal 2.0 guidestone regarding your career & finances and save time and mental energy caused by decision fatigue. Having a clear understanding of where you want to go and who you want to be (even if you have no idea how to get there) can eliminate the overwhelming struggle. Remember, you are responsible for your own happiness. Go get it!
